About NSE - IMF Seminar on Regional Economic Outlook
The next IMF World Economic Outlook will be published in the month of October 2023. Alongside, the IMF also releases the Regional Economic Outlook which discusses recent economic trends and prospects for countries in regions across Sub Saharan Africa, Western Hemisphere, Asia & Pacific, Middle East & Central Asia, and Europe. It not only highlights the implications for the region's economy and businesses in an already complex macroeconomic landscape but also provides recommendations for policymakers to navigate the anticipated challenges. Key takeaways from these reports, comprising of the local, regional, and global outlook, would be presented by the IMF staff at the NSE-IMF seminar scheduled to be held on Thursday, October 19th, 2023 (1700 IST), followed by a panel discussion to explore the implications for India.

Dr. Krishna Srinivasan
Director, Asia and Pacific Department, IMF
Dr. Krishna Srinivasan is the Director of Asia and Pacific Department (APD) at International Monetary Fund. He holds more than 27 years of experience working with the Fund. Prior to joining the Fund, he has worked with Indiana-Purdue University, World Bank, Centre for Policy Research and Planning Commission, New Delhi. His wide research on Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean along with climate and economic development issues has appeared in books, academic journals, and media publications. Dr. Srinivasan holds a PhD (Honors) in Economics from Indiana University, a Master’s in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, and a Bachelor’s (Honors) in Economics from the University of Delhi.
Dr. Thomas Helbling
Deputy Director, Asia and Pacific Department, IMF
Dr. Thomas Helbling is Deputy Director in the Asia Pacific Department of the International Monetary Fund. Previously, he was the Mission Chief for Mexico, Indonesia and the Philippines. He has worked on a wide range of issues and countries since joining the IMF in 1994. From 2012 to 2015, he was the chief of the World Economic Studies Division, co-directing the work on the IMF’s World Economic Outlook. From 2016 to 2019, he was the chief of the Australia-New Zealand Division and mission chief for both countries. His recent research has focused on commodity price dynamics and global economic conditions; global oil markets; international economic policy issues; international business cycle linkages; and economic history. He has a doctorate in International Economics from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr. Jay Peiris
Head of Regional Studies, Asia and Pacific Department, IMF
Dr. Jay Peiris is the Division Chief of Regional Studies in the Asia and Pacific Department (APD) at the IMF. He is in charge of APD's flagship Regional Economic Outlook publication. His past stints at the IMF were: Mission Chief for Myanmar and Deputy Division Chief covering ASEAN macro financial Surveillance; Resident Representative in the Philippines; Mission Chief to Tonga, and extensive surveillance and program experience in Asia and Africa. He joined the Economist Program at the IMF in 2001 after completing his D. Phil (PhD) in Economics at Oxford University as a British Chevening Scholar. He has published academic journal papers on a wide range of topics including inclusive growth, monetary policy and inflation, bond markets, banking and finance, macroeconomic models for emerging markets and co-edited books on ASEAN and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Sajjid Chinoy
MD & Chief India Economist, J.P. Morgan & Part-time Member, PM-EAC
Dr. Sajjid Chinoy is the Managing Director and Chief India Economist at J.P. Morgan. He is also currently serving a second term as part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM). Dr. Chinoy previously served on the Advisory Council to India’s 15th Finance Commission and was a member of the “Expert Committee to Revise and Strengthen the Monetary Policy Framework” set up by the Reserve Bank of India in 2013. He has served on other RBI committees including Offshore Rupee Markets and Developing a Secondary Market for Corporate Loans. In 2016, he served as a consultant to the FRBM Review Committee which proposed a new fiscal anchor for India. Dr. Chinoy has previously worked at the IMF and McKinsey & Company. He received his Ph.D. at Stanford University. He won the EXIM Bank award for the best dissertation by an Indian national in 2001.
Dr. Rupa Rege-Nitsure
Group Chief , Economist, L&T Finance Holdings Ltd.
Dr. Rupa Rege-Nitsure has been working as the Group Chief Economist of L&T Finance Holdings Ltd. since 2015. Prior to joining L&T, she worked as the Chief Economist at Bank of Baroda. She has also worked as a Senior Economist with ICICI and ICICI Bank and her key areas of specialization are Macroeconomics and Financial Intermediation. She has served on various committees appointed by the policymakers and published several articles in the field of policy-oriented research. In particular, she was a member of the Government of India Committee on Integration of Banking Structures, 2011 and RBI’s Expert Committee to Revise and Strengthen the Monetary Policy Framework (headed by Dr Urjit Patel, Deputy Governor, RBI), 2013. Dr. Rupa Rege-Nitsure holds M.A.(Eco), M.Phil (Eco) and Ph.D (Macro-Econometric Modelling) from Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics, Pune.
Shri. Madan Sabnavis
Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda
Shri. Madan Sabnavis is the Chief Economist at Bank of Baroda. He has been a corporate economist since 1987 and has worked in the fields of development banking, commercial banking, engineering, commodity markets and credit ratings. He has multiple interests in human behaviour, politics and social systems besides economics. He has over 2500 articles in financial publications and has published four books - Macro Economics Demystified, Eco-Quirks, Economics of India- how to fool all people for all times, Hits and Misses- Indian Banking Story. He has served on various committees including SEBI's CDAC, and RAC, IIBEF's RAC committee and education committee. He has been the Chairman and Co-Chairman of committees of BCCI and IMC. He is a post-graduate in Economics from Delhi School of Economics and graduated from St. Stephen's College in Economics (Honours).
Dr. Tirthankar Patnaik
Chief Economist, NSE (Moderator)
Dr. Tirthankar Patnaik is Chief Economist at the National Stock Exchange of India. He has over two decades of experience in the Indian capital markets, academic research, credit research in macro and sector strategy, quantitative finance and consumer banking. He started his career as a researcher at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) and worked on a number of academic and corporate projects in econometrics and quantitative finance, followed by a stint in consumer banking analytics as an analyst with the Global Consumer Group of Citibank in India and Europe. His next focus area was equity strategy for institutional clients, initially with Citigroup Global Markets as India equity strategist, and then with Religare Capital Markets Ltd, as the India Strategist and Chief Economist. In his last assignment prior to joining NSE, he was the Chief Strategist and Head of Research for India, at Japan-based Mizuho Bank.
